4.9 miles to Herrington Creek, elevation 10,307’
We had arranged for a “shuttle” in the morning to take us from Leadville back to Twin Lakes. In this case, our shuttle was a nice lady and local hiker who had posted her availability on the Colorado Trail Foundation’s website.
The Twin Lakes Trail soon intersected with the Colorado Trail which we followed to Herrington Creek. This would be our basecamp for two nights. Along the way we passed the Lilly Ponds which featured some really impressive beaver lodges, dams, and the ponds they created.
The next day was the climb up Mt. Elbert, the highest peak in Colorado and the 2nd highest in the lower 48 states (behind Mt Whitney)!
