Day 4 – Crooked Lake back to Spring Creek Draw

Time to reverse our direction and start trekking back south.  After breakfast of bagels and mixed berries it was time to pack up. We traveled quickly across Crooked Lake and then over the trail we had blazed overland to Sunday Lake.  It was easier this time.  We paused on Sunday Lake to retrieve the gear and food we had stashed up in the tree and have some lunch snacks, then we were back on the Beartrap River.  The only near mishap occurred as we were approaching a section of frozen rapids.  Those ahead of us had moved up the bank and into the woods and normally our dogs would have followed without fail.  But this time Alice and Mullet led the team toward the rapids and likely thin ice before we could get them to turn or stop.  Olivia got their attention but Ellen’s foot broke through the ice when we shouted “hike” and pushed off.   Through the hole we saw the flowing water below!

We camped our last night at the same location as our first … and the wolves visited again as well!  Such a haunting and beautiful sound under the light of a full moon.  Temperatures were warming up and we all slept poorly in our heavy bags.
