Day 1 – Twin Lakes to Pine creek

16 miles to Pine creek, elevation 10,397’

After 36 hours in Twin Lakes, starting acclimating to high altitude, it was time to hit the trail. Dave from Virginia who also stayed in the same Roadhouse Lodge, gave us a ride to the trail head. Otherwise it would have been an extra 4 mile hike.

We made great progress in the morning.  In spite of the ups and downs, by 12:30 pm we had hiked 10 miles and we were already at Clear Creek where we had intended to camp the first night.  However, since it was still very early decided to continue another 6.2 miles to Pine Creek. This included 4.6 miles all uphill with an additional elevation gain of 2,700 feet.  As we were not yet fully acclimated, it was very tough going.  We were feeling the effects of the altitude, and we were running low on water.  Finally, near the height of land, we came upon a trickle of water which we could filter.  We rested briefly and then it was another 1.6 steep miles down to Pine Creek.

In total we had hiked 16 miles but it took us 12 hours. We made it to camp with just enough light to set up camp and make dinner. Jeff was especially exhausted and essentially collapsed into the tent. Time for a well-deserved rest.
