Collegiate Peaks Loop, CO

We had been talking about doing another long distance backpacking trip similar to the John Muir Trail during the winter months. We wanted to do the Colorado Trail, but with limited vacation time we opted for the 160 mile Collegiate Peaks Loop that includes both sections of the Colorado Trail and the Continental Divide Trail. After completing the loop in 12 days we decided to climb Mt. Elbert – the highest peak in Colorado and the 2nd highest peak in the lower 48. We did this trip in late August into early September. Great weather without the famous late afternoon thunderstorms. We ended up hiking 143 miles plus 10.2 roundtrip up/back Mt. Elbert. Plus we can’t forget the 6 miles of town walking in Leadville. It was a great trip and we both cannot wait to do some more exploring of Colorado.
