Rest day – Yay! Over the past several days we had paddled a great distance. We needed a rest day before we tackled the Berg River. We slept in and had blueberry pancakes and bacon for breakfast. We putzed around camp for a while and then decided it was time to explore the waterfalls and do some fishing. We left camp around 10:45 am and paddled towards the waterfalls/rapids that were marked on the map with a skull and crossbones. We found a safe place to land and then explored the uppermost set of rapids. This was the start of the Berg River that we would start the next day.

After our exploration, we realized it was already 2:30 pm and we had yet to eat lunch. After lunch we fished for several hours, caught some small pike, and paddled around the north end of the lake. Fresh cut saplings in the water near a beaver lodge indicated that it was occupied. We trolled and fished some more without much luck and so we paddled back to camp.

Once at camp Jeff said: “I’m going to fish off the shore and catch us some dinner.” He was joking as neither one of us had caught anything significant yet. However, about 10 minutes later Jeff is yelling for the net. Jeff had caught a nice walleye. Jeff cleaned and fileted the walleye. Ellen fried up the fish and cooked some mushroom risotto. Dinner was delicious and we were hopeful that we would have more fish dinners. The rest of the evening was spent watching the sunset, Ellen journaling and Jeff repairing his shoes.
End of day four and having seen only on canoe two day earlier, we seem to have this place to ourselves!
