We slept well and slept in. We didn’t get out of our sleeping bags until 8:30 am! Now that is way beyond our usual waking time. Jeff was up before sunrise and saw lots of stars but unfortunately no Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights), even though the probability was high.
Today’s goal was to get to a rumored fishing “honey hole” and world class campsite on Funger lake. We wanted some walleye for dinner. During the first part of the day we paddled the Little Caribou river downstream. Clear skies and warm weather made for a great time. We had lunch at a great campsite that was facing south with lots of flat grassy areas. After lunch there were four portages around some rocky, swift water that we couldn’t paddle through plus one itty bitty swift that we decided to run.

After arriving at Funger Lake, we located the “honey hole” and nearby campsite in a narrow section of the lake. Unfortunately, as we got closer we realized that it was occupied. Bummer, but this would be only one of canoes that we would encounter during the entire 10 days. We set up camp at another location and then paddled back out to fish the honey hole. We didn’t catch dinner but we did catch a few small pike and one small walleye. So we weren’t skunked.
We went back to camp and made chicken fajitas for dinner and spent the rest of the evening watching the moon rise along with Jupiter and Saturn. It was a great day to be on the water and enjoy the late summer beauty.
