Pre-Trip Preparations

This trip would not be a catered affair.  Guides and guests alike are expected to share in the communal tasks necessary for winter travel and survival in the backcountry.  This would include packing and driving the sleds, caring for the dogs, cutting wood and making fires, chipping through lake ice or boiling snow for water, and of course preparing our morning and evening meals over the fire.

We were thrilled to learn that our lead guide would be the owner of Wintergreen and world-renowned explorer Paul Schurke.  In 1986 Paul co-led the International Polar Expedition, an unsupported dogsled journey to the north pole.  In 1989 Paul built an American-Soviet expedition team that trekked 1200 miles from Siberia over the Bering Strait to Alaska, promoting peaceful cooperation and joining Inuit communities long separated by the cold war.  Yes, we would be in good hands.
