Day 3 – 7.4 miles (2/21)

As predicted, it started to rain around 4 am. We got up early and we’re on the trail by 7:15 am. No warm breakfast this morning – pop-tarts it was. We climbed out of Lower Labarge Canyon and got back onto the other end of the Red Tanks trail. Then it really started to rain and eventually snow as we got higher in elevation. We then took the Whiskey Spring trail instead of the Bluff Springs trail. The Bluff Spring trails was unknown to us and lower in elevation. We were not sure how hard the streams would be running and we had done the Whiskey Spring trail the previous year.

Looking east toward the area where we were the day before….snow!

We topped out and then it was a long descent towards Dutchman trail and back to the trail-head. We arrived around 1:30 pm to a warm car and blankets. Thanks to Jeff’s parents. As we drove back to the house, we looked back and saw that the Superstition mountains were really getting hammered with rain and snow. We were glad to off the trail.

The view of the Superstition mountains from the back of the house the next day.
