Day 12 (7/15) – site at mile 119.1 to site at mile 132.7

JMT mile 132.7

Miles hiked today: 13.6

Site elevation: 10,482’

Another epic day! Even though we got a late start (8:30 am) we accomplished more than we had planned. Today’s hike went through some spectacular scenery. We started in a meadow, then climbed up-to Evolution basin with several awesome lakes surrounded by towering mountains. Water seemed to be flowing everywhere!

As we continued to climb higher and higher we got closer to Muir Pass. We passed several beautiful alpine lakes.

At 3:45 pm and 9.6 miles later we were at the historic Muir Hut on top of Muir pass (11,969’). This stone building was built in 1930 to honor John Muir and provide emergency shelter. We both have seen tons of pictures of this place and now actually being in that same spot was surreal.

After about 25 minutes at the pass it was time to go down and find a campsite. We finally found one around 7 pm. The hike down was nothing short of spectacular! There still was lots of snow pack and the snow melt was full on. We must have crossed countless streams and runoffs.

It is has hard to describe in words the scenery and pictures don’t do it justice. But here are a few.

We are blessed to be able to be on this trail.
